Well, they are, of course--WWI was fought in, near, and around various towns & villages, as well as the fields & forests in between. Some of them are also major towns--Liege & Lille, e.g.
In fact, that has got to be about the most fought-over corner of Europe there is--possibly the most fought-over corner in the world. It was already quite bloodstained when Austen was writing, a full century in advance of the big ones to come.
