Charles Austen and family?

] You always find some curious facts when going through the bios of the family members.

Thanks, Leif and Jason and Linden, for these very interesting posts.

I have a question about Charles Austen's naval experience. Honan mentions that Charles' wife lived with him on board his ship. Is this true? Was this a common practice? Did they have children, and if so, did the children live with them on board?

After reading the many interesting posts here on Regency naval life (the cat-o-nine-tails thread below comes to mind, shudders) I am surprised that women (so sheltered in Regency society) and/or children would have been permitted exposure to such a life. And what happened with the women/children during battle?
