Less illustrious offspring

] FWA had six sons and five daughters. Two sons joined the Navy and two joined the Church, one became a barrister, the last one died an infant. Of the five daughters sadly three died young at 29, 13 and 35. Of his eleven children only five survived him.

29 and 35 wasn't that young! In her time Mary Jane Austen (died aged 29) had managed to marry Admiral George Thomas Maitland Purvis and have five children. One of the girls, Catherine Anne Austen had a career too and was a novelist. She married John Hubback and they were the parents and grandparents of the writers of "JA's Sailor Brothers".

Charles Austen died of cholera aged 72 and had five girls and three boys by the Palmer sisters, Frances Fitzwilliam and Harriet E. five of his eight children pre-deceased him.

"Charles (died 1852) had a son Charles John (died 1867), a commander in the Navy, who died early and must have left his family impoverished, for his son Charles John (d. 1896) was sent to Christ's Hospital and became a telegraphist, while of his three sons, one was apprenticed to a bricklayer but later drove a bread van, one became a grocer's assistant and the third a printer."

CA's offspring then disappear from genealogical view whereas FWA's continue to "make it" as writers and naval personnel, early female university students (Jane Hubback) and artist/painters (Mary Hubback).

The above quote is taken from an unpublished work "Jane Austen's Kindred", by Joan Corder, 1953, in the posession of the College of Arms
