Lord Moira: a correction and some additions.
In Response To: Earl of Moira ()

Moira, by Reynolds

Jack's slipped up here (even Homer sleeps). There was only one relevant Moira, not a father and son, so the man who fought with distinction in the Am Rev War was the same as the Governer of Bengal. (I know Jack won't mind me correcting him, cos I asked him by e-mail, and he said `You have my permission to tell the world I fouled up.' Isn't he a nice man?)

There's a link below to a potted biography of the man. Another potted biography of him appears on the excellent `Oatmeal for the Foxhounds' site devoted to Banastre Tarleton

Go to the side bar and click on `Friends, Comrades and Enemies' for Hastings/Moira/Rawdon.

Some snippets that don't appear in these two bios:

Though he didn't repay Henry Austen's loan, he could sometimes be very generous. When the French diplomat Biron (formerly Lauzun) was arrested for debt, to the acute embarrassment of the French mission led by Talleyrand, it was Moira who bailed him out (see the bio of Biron/Lauzun on the Oatmeal for the Foxhounds' for more details).

Moira also had a poem dedicated to him by Mary `Perdita' Robinson: unfortunately I can't find it on-line.
