Not establishment anyway...

It's certainly a possible theory, that JA used the name Darcy to suggest Whiggish connotations. However, the name also has Irish, Norman and Roman Catholic connections in its various forms. So my theory is, whatever the answer, Darcy was certainly not meant to suggest someone of the establishment.

On the subject of the possibility JA was implying possible Roman Catholic connections, which I don't think has been discussed in detail here before, I wondered if anyone had any information or thoughts about this?

1. There was a Darcy involved in the gunpowder plot
(e.g. The name Darcy was used as an alias by one of the conspiritors involved in the gunpowder plot)

2. The Irish Darcys are Roman Catholic

2. JA wrote in her History that she was "partial to the roman catholic religion"
