English -- not French -- Toast
In Response To: toast ()

Somewhere in my reading, and I have forgotten where, I came across a comment by a French visitor of JA's period about the English habit of eating toast. From vague memory, the French person said that it was done by holding slices of bread over the fire, and buttered. I remember noticing it as a rare example of the French commending English cooking, because he/she said it was excellent. And so do I.
