A period way
In Response To: toasted cheese ()

] ]In my family "toasted cheese" is grated sharp cheddar cheese on bread put under the broiler till the cheese melts. This comes from my grandmother who was born and raised in Westerham, Kent. Grilled cheese on the other hand is a slice of american cheese between two pieces of bread, buttered and grilled on both sides.

Is to put the toasted bread (already tosted on a fork) into an oven (i.e. beehive, stove oven (although cooking stoves weren't really in use yet in the U.S.), on in a Dutch oven AKA baking oven and then put the cheese on top until it gets bubbly. I'm getting hungry reading these posts so I'm going for lunch.
