Oh, good!

I was imagining something like the Lancashire Clog- a wooden-soled shoe with really solid oxhide uppers, which lace up, such as are beloved of Morris dancers. These things have deinite working-class connotations, having been invented as a "safety-shoe" for mill workers, and could hardly be described as elegant. However, like Doc Martens, they are strong and well-made, and have a certain panache if worn with the right outfit. But the thought of Mrs Allen wearing such things boggled my mind!

Your suggestion is much better, Dee. Thanks- I shall imagine 'clog' to be a sort of overshoe, like galoshes. I wonder if they were wooden soled, though? And iron tipped, perhaps?
