Thank you Louisa. It would seem you are also our "lioness of the wardrobe". I feel enlightened indeed; by your decription of the material per se and (thanks to Dee )by the quotes from literature above.
But if list shoes and clogs were not fashionable, this must mean that elegant ladies would bring a pair of extra silk slippers to use solely inside the ballroom? And how about the gentlemen? No boots in a ballrooom, I suppose - unless you were in military attire? Hmm sorry if this has been discussed before!?
