I always thought that the Austen heroines would have long hair because of an idea that I had that she didn't really like short hair. I think it was because of this bit from the letters:

"Anna will not be surprised that the cutting off her hair is very much regretted by several of the party in this house; I am tolerably reconciled to it by considering that two or three years may restore it again."
