Clergymen in JA's time

As an Episcopalian (Anglican) I should know the answer to this question, but I don't. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what kind of education/preparation a man needed to take "holy orders" in JA's time.

In S&S it almost sounds like all Edward had to do was ask, and he'd be ordained. I also have to wonder what kind of a bishop would ordain a buffoon like Mr. Collins, or a cad like Wickham. Mr. Elton is a fortune hunter, but for all we know he might on the other hand be a good pastor to parishoners.

Anybody have any answers/ideas?
