In Response To: Fire Buckets ()

] ] The entrance Hall to Chawton House has a series of hooks along one wall, apparently to hang leather buckets on, in case of emergency.

... I know I saw such a series somewhere last summer. Can't have been at Chawton House then ?! They were hanging on a contraption high up above our heads on the wall of a hallway. We were invited by the guide to guess what they were intended for. If I recall correctly, you had to lower the whole thing to get hold of the buckets.

The leather buckets were specially designed, rivetted at base and sides, with a copper rim and flexible carrying strap. A deep foot rim could be held firmly while tossing water out.Sometimes roundbottomed to prevent their disappearance for any other use.(From Christina Hardyment, Behind the Scenes which has 5 pages on fire precautions)
