I have always thought that the whole village smithy thing was absolutely ludicrous. It's the only Andrew Davies addition that makes me cringe every time I hear it. There are others that are pretty bad but this takes the cake. I realize that he put it in as part of his humanize Darcy strategy but surely he could have thought up something a little less embarrassing. Even CF looks awkward saying the lines. Longfellow didn't write the poem that it is lifted from for another quarter of a century or so; and can you imagine JA writing that scene? She did write wonderful human Darcy scenes at Pemberley so why put in something so silly?
