I wonder if anyone could tell me something about the inns portrayed in the recent P&P and Persuasion adaptations. Lizzie sits in a parlor when Darcy comes upon her reading Jane's letters, and a whole gang socialize in a parlor at the White Hart in Persuasion. Were these common rooms, like lobbies today, or were they private and rented along with the bed rooms?
