Bedford Square

A Topographical and Statistical description of the County of Middlesex ,etc (1810) by George Alexander Cooke

Leaving this church, High Street brings us to the junction of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road; proceeding along the latter we reach Great Russel Street, which branches off to the east, and is remarkable, as containing the ancient mansion of the DuLe of Montague, which was built upon a French plan by the first Duke of that name, who had been ambassador to France. The staircase, and ceilings were painted by Rousseau and La Fosse; the latter ot whom also painted the Apotheosis of iris, and the Assembly of the gods.

Montague House is now converted into a depositary of the extensive and highly valuable collection of the British Museum. In front of the house is a spacious square, separated from the street by an high brick wall, in which there is placed a grand portal leading to the house.

Quotations
 Chapter 43
“I had almost forgot (it was Edmund’s fault: he gets into my head more than does me good) one very material thing I had to say from Henry and myself—I mean about our taking you back into Northamptonshire. My dear little creature, do not stay at Portsmouth to lose your pretty looks. Those vile sea–breezes are the ruin of beauty and health. My poor aunt always felt affected if within ten miles of the sea, which the Admiral of course never believed, but I know it was so. I am at your service and Henry’s, at an hour’s notice. I should like the scheme, and we would make a little circuit, and shew you Everingham in our way, and perhaps you would not mind passing through London, and seeing the inside of St. George’s, Bedford Square."
