Re: How they told the time
In Response To: How they told the time? ()

This fine watch from 1775 can be yours for only $5600 !

It appears that the sundial was the thing used for a very long time before the clockwork was invented. There was pocket sundials of various types. They made fine pocket watches already in the 17th century but with not very good preciscion.

I wonder if there was a clock in the Austen's home? It's possible. Or if any one, her father most likely, had a pocket watch? Does anyone know how expensive they were, or how common it was to have a watch?
Perhaps they were affordable as long as it wasn't silver or gold.

Didn't the Austens have a sundial in the garden? (Don't know where I got that from).
