I think Leif was talking originally about how the lesser orders (read, those who could *not* afford watches) could tell the time well enough to show up to work on time, etc etc. Frank had posted a message about daymarks (very informative) which seems to have disappeared. [????]

Are there any references in Austen's works to how the labouring/ working/poorer classes would tell time if they were not working in a richer person's house or office (with a clock prominently on display)? The church bells and the position of the sun seem to be the best bets, so far.
