On the subject of Wickham
In Response To: Isn't there ()

There is a town near Fareham, Hampshire, called Wickham.

Last year when the Pemberley ladies were visiting, I bought Peggy S a white porcelain boot with the Wickham crest on it. Some of you will be familiar with such things, which were made from the end of the 19th century to about 1940 for the souvenir trade.

Anyway, the motto under the Wickham crest was:

Manners mayketh Man

And I couldn't help but wonder whether this was what had inspired JA with dear George. Fareham is in exactly the right place for a lady with sailor brothers.
