] ] Anyway, the motto under the Wickham crest was: "Manners mayketh Man."
] I was aware of William of Wykeham. It would seem quite typical of JA to produce an 'anti hero' who has qualities that are the complete opposite of all that WofW stood for. Manners certainly did not mayke George!
It is interesting indeed that Wickham seems to have been a common name for places and people - including neighbors and bishops, goodness! Probably it was wise for JA to select a common name for a rake like Wickham (and Willoughby - Lisette above points out that there is a village called Willoughby). After all, in JA's day fictional publications were not equipped with the various ubiquitous legal disclaimers of today. Even so, I can’t imagine the Wickhams of Steventon parish would have been too pleased with P&P. Perhaps – hopefully – they weren’t great readers!
