Manners Mayketh Man

] Anyway, the motto under the Wickham crest was: "Manners mayketh Man."

That's the epitaph of William of Wykeham, a midieval Bishop of Winchester, whose tomb is the most conspicuous monument in Winchester Cathedral and would have been well known to JA. One might say George W tested this theory to the breaking point.
