William Deedes
In Response To: M.T. Henry's business dealings ()

] Hythe Bank- Henry’s sponsor was probably William Deedes, MP for Hythe, and “connected to the Austens by marriage”.

Ah, the wonders of google. Here's a link to the White Hart in Hythe, which was owned by a William Deedes at the time: if not the MP, it must be a relation. Would it have been the capital that was used to back Henry? I notice that, at roughly this period, the host is referred to as Thomas Jupp. Perhaps Mr Deedes lost the inn in Henry's bankrupcty.

An inn called the White Hart appears in `The Watsons'.

(And on a personal note: I know the inn! Though I didn't know about the history when I used to drink there).
