Table Manners

Hello, this is the first time that I have posted on the L&T Board and I hope that I am putting my question on the appropriate board. My question is this, it seems that several times while watching Austen films, I have noticed that when they are eating they often talk with their mouths full of food. Now I am not saying that I never do this myself, but where I come from it is considered bad manners. Was it considered bad manners in JA's time and country? Just wondering.
