While re-reading the part in P&P about Georgiana's aborted elopement, the question of her 30,000 pounds came to my mind. At 15, would a girl have control over her fortune such that she could elope with whomever she wanted and still claim her money? Or if her guardian had been inclined to do so, could he have refused to give her her money because he disapproved of her marriage? I would assume that her father could have cut her off, but did guardians have the same ability?
