MT: The service was on a Sunday morning.
In Response To: MT: The Chapel (NA Ch. 5) ()

] After meeting Isabella for the first time, JA writes:

] "...and that they should there part with a most affectionate and lengthened shake of hands, after learning, to their mutual relief, that they should... … say their prayers in the same chapel the next morning."

] Does anyone have any ideas as to which chapel they attended? Cheryl at the NA board thought:

] "The only church mentioned by name in NA is Walcot which is the church Jane Austen's parents were married in and where her father is buried. The church is mentioned by John Thorpe, of all people, who noted upon his introduction to Catherine that his horses didn't tire a bit until they passed Walcot Church)." (Chapter 7; line 80)

] Walcot church is near Camden Place.

] Do you suppose the chapel mentioned in the above excerpt was in St. Jame's Square? It's the only place on my map of Bath, in my Penguin Classics version of NA (c.1803), that fits the bill; it sounds like an appropriate place for a chapel. But my map of Bath is vague and undetailed; it shows the Pump Room but not the Roman Baths. It does not show Bath Abbey or Walcot Church. I found a web site that states that Bath Abbey (see link below)is some yards from the Roman Baths/Pump Room. So that’s another possibility.

] I suppose these church’s have chapels attached/in them. Anyone else have any ideas to the identity of the chapel?

Northanger Abbey doesn't exactly state explicitly what day of the week it was; so, after some research, I've figured out it was Sunday morning. Since it was a Sunday morning service and not some off-day devotional, it was probably held in the "main" part of whatever church they attended. I'm assuming that Isabella and Catherine are CofE...does that narrow down which church they attended? (e.g. Walcot ot Bath Abbey) I can't tell what churces this knowlede eliminates/includes as I'm not sure if these churches are CofE or other.

Thanks for all your input!
