Not just in Hollywood. Orthodontia for the masses came in 50 years ago in the USA. In the early 1960s in Baltimore, Maryland, where I grew up, it was de rigeur for a middle class kid to have his/her teeth straightened. I and pretty much all of my acquaintance went through it in middle school.
