] At least according to Antonia Fraser's biography "Marie Antoinette: The Journey". I don't remember the dentist's name, but he used a device that I believe was called the "pelican" - all I know is that it was metallic (sounds painful, too). However it did apparently straighten her teeth out. Of course, as has been pointed out, hardly anyone had the money for such treatment, but it was around and it least one variation of it did work.
