I had not thought about the point that the brighter colours would be harder to produce, and therefore more expensive than paler colours.

I guess the servants are the answer. Where I live in Bristol, there is a Georgian house, complete with period laundary room, and detailed descriptions of the weekly pattern of the washing as done in that house.
