Hume was a lot more than a historian. He was one of the leading lights of the 18th century Scottish Enlightenment, who wrote extensively on logic, epistomology, and the psychology of education. His History of England was for many years the standard work on the subject, written from a Tory perspective.

Robertson, his Scottish contemporary, was Principal of Edinburgh University, best known for his History of Mary Stuart and James VI.
