A ship laden with gold, would of course, be every captain's dream, but one rarely realised. However, there were lots of other commodities which could turn a handsome profit. A schooner loaded with sugar, for example, would be worth a fair sum. Elsewhere, spices or tobacco were also mentioned as being particularly welcome.
