In Response To: Dating Mr Darcy portrait ()

What was so remarkable about the portrait that JA wrote of, was that Darcy is actually smiling there. The most portraits of men from that time are painted (mostly) looking 'serious'. I think that JA made the picture of Darcy smiling because, Lizzy would see him from another side. That he isn't that bad because even on a portrait, when men look normally 'grave', he's smiling.
